Titleist brand started with a vision - and an X-ray. Titleist\'s success story began on a Sunday in 1930 when Phil Young, who was a dedicated amateur golfer and owner of a rubber company, missed a well-beaten putt in match play against his dentist. Convinced that the ball itself was the cause of the missed putt, Young and the dentist went to the dentist\'s office, x-rayed the golf ball in question and found that its core was in fact outside the center of the ball. With his discovery, Phil Young persuaded his MIT college friend, Fred Bommer, who was a rubber specialist but also enthralled golfers to go to the Acushnet Golf Division. They decided to develop the best performing golf ball in the world with the highest quality - where each ball would be consistent with consistent quality, ball after ball after ball. It took Young and Bommer three arduous years to complete the first Titleist golf ball, but when it was completed in 1935, it could be introduced to club professionals and golfers as the best ball ever made. After learning the lesson, Young applied a control of the manufacturing process that is still used to this day: Every Titleist golf ball x-ray.
